Garvey McIntosh Middlebury Institute Alumnus — International Program Specialist at NASA The world needs people who can make an impact. People who can inspire, educate, and innovate. People who can reach across boundaries, and marry principles with real-world engagement. The world needs people who can understand our greatest challenges, from poverty to climate change, and the connections between them. The Middlebury Institute of International Studies is a graduate school creating the next generation of global changemakers. Our degrees emphasize deep collaborative learning: they immerse you in culture and language, and give you the opportunity to acquire and apply practical, professional skills. The world needs people like you. Student Profiles Michael Ross — Alumnus Translation and Interpretation View Q&A × What made the Institute a special experience for you? I studied education as an undergrad and became a high school language teacher immediately after college. Within a few months, I realized that teaching was not for me! The Institute gave me the opportunity to use my language skills in a new career. That change has truly paid off. With my degree in translation and interpretation, I’m making more money, I have a better quality of life, and I’m much, much happier. What’s more, I have seen how Institute graduates come out of school immediately at the top of their fields. To be honest, there are some unscrupulous people in the language services industry who don’t know what they’re doing, but everyone knows that they can trust Middlebury Institute graduates. What are you doing now? I work as a freelance translator and interpreter based in Chicago. Highlights include working as a liaison interpreter for the State Department (where I took on assignments focused on entrepreneurship in Africa, diplomatic security, and fighting terrorism), doing simultaneous interpretation for the UN Capital Development Fund, and translating two published books about video games. Anna Galbraith — Student International Education Management View Q&A × Why did you choose the Middlebury Institute? I wanted a school that would foster the skills I had learned living abroad into something marketable. The IEM program felt like it was tailor-made for me: I’d be able to continue using Spanish, and I would have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through the practicum. And since I’m from Nebraska, the proximity to the ocean (and sea otters!) was a huge draw. What makes the Institute a special experience for you? I get to have class with some of the most dynamic people I’ve ever met, and learn from professors who are generous with their time and knowledge. What’s next for you? My experience studying abroad marked a definite “before” and “after” in my life, and I can think of no better way to pay tribute to that experience than by ensuring that other students have the same opportunity. I’d like to maintain my connection with the Spanish language and work to create the best possible study abroad programs in Spanish-speaking countries for students at the college level. DJ Watts — Alumnus International Trade and Economic Diplomacy View Q&A × Why did you choose the Middlebury Institute? I chose the Institute because I wanted to continue my language studies and study subjects that affect the world. What made the Institute a special experience for you? It’s pretty wild how a school this small has students from so many different countries. Most of us have lived in and traveled to several countries, and for those who haven’t yet, they get the kind of exposure that will make them want to. I believe this kind of environment helps everyone at the Institute become more globally conscious. What are you doing now? Right now I am working in operations for a Japanese tea distributor in Los Angeles. Within the next year I plan on taking the customs broker exam to get my customs brokerage license. After that, I would like to do work involving trade compliance in either the private or public sector. It would also be great if I could keep using my second language (Japanese) wherever I end up working. Alan Lovewell — Alumnus International Environmental Policy View Q&A × What degree did you pursue at the Institute? I studied international environmental policy. What made the Institute a special experience for you? I got to experience working with several organizations on a range of important projects. The Institute community was very supportive, too—and passionate about creating positive change. How did the Institute influence your life? I knew I wanted to work on ocean health and management issues. At the Institute, I realized there was an opportunity in business to solve many of society’s most pressing issues. What are you doing now? I’ve started a company called Real Good Fish (formerly Local Catch) based on a business plan a few colleagues and I wrote in our first semester. Attending the Institute exposed me to lots of innovative ideas and solutions. And the community encouraged me to seek out new experiences and gain unique perspectives on the world. James Slaton — Student Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages View Q&A × Where did you earn your undergraduate degree? I got my undergraduate degree in French from Auburn University in Alabama. I’m from Washington, D.C. Why did you choose the Middlebury Institute? While stationed in Romania with the Navy, I started a nonprofit organization to help local orphans increase their educational and professional opportunities. I wanted to focus on improving their English so they could qualify for more jobs and educational programs. I came to the Institute because I wanted to study both practical and theoretical applications of teaching and linguistics in the foreign language classroom. What makes the Institute a special experience for you? I love what a great job it does helping us develop effective teaching practices for our future classrooms, grounded in solid pedagogical theory. Everything we do relates back to the language classroom and how we can become better teachers. And the small class sizes foster a family-like atmosphere, where teachers know your name. What’s next for you? I’d like to return to Romania and expand my nonprofit organization, so we can provide both English instruction and funding for postsecondary educational opportunities. Kyle Pilutti — Student Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies View Q&A × Where did you earn your undergraduate degree? I have BA degrees in humanities and Arabic with a minor in mathematics from Michigan State University. Why did you choose the Middlebury Institute? The Institute program allowed me to study NPTS while still continuing with my Arabic studies. What makes the Institute a special experience for you? The Institute’s exemplary faculty and far-reaching connections are what have made my experiences here amazing. What is next for you? I hope to focus on international relations in nonproliferation efforts— approaching the issue from an international position, such as in an agency like the IAEA, or from a national position, such as the State Department or a National Laboratory. Jorge Silva — Alumnus International Policy and Development View Q&A × Why did you choose the Middlebury Institute? The range of people that choose the Institute—the tremendous diversity of backgrounds and experiences—is what made my time there meaningful. They helped me understand issues from different points of view. What made the Institute a special experience for you? I gained valuable knowledge about how policies are developed, and the consequences they carry. This wealth of ins...
